What Is a Committee Person?

All committee people serve the same purpose: to get Democrats elected at the local, state, and national levels.

A committee person is the point of contact between Democratic voters in a precinct and the Democratic Party.

Every voting precinct can have up to 2 Democratic committee people.

When Are Committee People Elected?

Committee people are elected every four years when the governor is up for election during the primary.

Democratic committee person elections will take place on Tuesday, May 19th, 2026.

(Committee slot vacancies between elections may be filled by appointment.)

What Are Committee Person Responsibilities?

Some committee person responsibilities include:

  • Communicate with voters: Share election dates and voting information. Help neighbors register, vote by mail, and find polling places.
  • Boost Democratic participation: Increase voter registration, promote mail-in voting, and recruit election volunteers.
  • Support Democratic candidates: Inform voters about endorsed candidates, circulate petitions and materials, and help canvass or phone bank.
  • Attend meetings & vote on party business: Join committee meetings, vote on endorsements, and recruit new members.
  • Be a grassroots organizer: Serve as a local voting resource and represent the Democratic Party in community outreach.

Who Is Eligible to Be a Democratic Committee Person?

  • Be a registered Democrat for at least the past 2 years
  • Physically live in the precinct
  • Not have taken or held a partisan appointive role under a non-Democratic administration (unless qualifying for an exception)
  • Not have supported Republican candidates or other opponents
  • Not have supported a non-endorsed candidate against an MCDC-endorsed candidate in the last two years

How Do You Become a Committee Person?

Now is petition season.

Any eligible candidate must collect 10 signatures from eligible Democratic voters in the precinct and submit a petition to appear on the primary ballot by March 10th.
